Coming soon! The Temple VOAD Store. We will be working with Embroidme of Exton, PA , design and develop custom Temple VOAD logo apparel.
2009 will be a year of reorganization for the Temple University VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) Instead of single group of volunteers from Temple University we will be promoting and supporting the establishment of separate Disaster Response Teams (DRT) with each College, School, Center, Institute or Administrative Department. The concept is for each group to be organized and maintained within the structure of their College, School, Center etc. We also believe that this would foster increased participation in terms of community involvement and service. Any group within the Temple University community that is interestedin deveoping a DRT please contact George Heake at gheake@temple.edu or 215-204-7177.
Our Durable Medical Equipment(DME) Response System will be developed further and we will be aggressively seeking funding to support those efforts at a local, state, regional, national and international levels.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Regional DME project will be focused on developing a sustainable community durable medical equipment (DME) program to build capacity for DME response to emergencies and disasters within 5 counties that make the SEPA region(Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, County)
The new structure of the Temple would harness the skills, inspiration and innovation of a well respected academic community. These skills would support the response to emergencies and disasters at a local, state, regional, state, and international levels. Support from the Temple community can come in various forms.
These are just a few examples:
- Film/Television students and faculty developing accessible public education videos for emergency preparedness for the community
- Student, Faculty and Staff with language translation skills assisting with translation in response to large scale apartment fire or translating emergency preparedness materials for the community.
- Assisting seniors with personal preparedness skills.
- Disability experts providing consultation on ADA compliance, self advocacy and disability studies.
- Carpenters, plumbers, and electricians assisting offering assistance in the upgrading of an emergency shelter, non profit agency doing community outreach regarding emergency preparedness.
- Social Work Faculty and students becoming certified through SEPA Red Cross through their Disaster Response Team (DRT) program to do case management with disaster victims

The Temple VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active In Disaster) was founded as a result of a very successful Hurricane Katrina and Rita relief effort to the Gulf Region of the United States. Enough critically needed durable medical equipment was collected to fill a tractor trailer. The initial effort was followed by an even more successful equipment collection which filled an even larger semi truck. It all started with the incredible group of people who are the Institute on Disabilities, joined by many others who make the Temple University community a great place to experience. Responding quickly, Facilities, Temple Police, Parking, Athletics, IT & Computer Services, Recycling, and others asked how they could help. Considerable logistic support was provided by PEMA (Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency).
Donations poured in from Philadelphia and across the state of Pennsylvania thanks to the efforts of United Way , Red Cross, PhillyHealth.org, ARC of Pennsylvania, PA Developmental Disabilities Council, Inglis House , PA Protection and Advocacy, United Cerebral Palsy, Pennsylvania Initiative on Assistive Technology (PIAT) and their partners, PA State Independent Living Council, and numerous others.
The true heroes in the end were the residents of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania and New Jersey who donated equipment and volunteered their time to gather and pack the equipment, then load it and send it on its way to the LATAN organization(Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network) in Baton Rouge , LA.
Temple University VOAD's goal is to carry that spirit forward to build a permanent program in order to prepare AHEAD for times of emergency or disaster.
VOAD is committed to supporting community activities that need assistance.
