The Temple University VOAD will be changing its name to Temple University Disaster Response Corps. The name was changed to better express our mission and to avoid any further confusion with our supportive partner, the SEPA VOAD.
We will will be working with the Temple University Community which will include Faculty, Students, Staff to develop various workgroups with various focuses developing various support efforts to develop local, state, regional and national capacity for disaster/emergency preparedness, planning, response, recovery and mitigation.

As part of our new focus we are developing a rapid response and deployment Disability Search, Rescue and Recovery Team (DSRAR) with a focus on the rapid response and deployment related to disasters and people with disabilities and other at risk groups such as the elderly and children. The team will be comprised of specialists in RehabilitationEngineering , Assistive Technology, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, TherapeuticRecreation, Physical Therapists,Doctors: Emergency Medicine, Nurses, GIS Specialists, Public Health, Accessible Information and Technology, Advanced Field/SatelliteCommunications. If you are interested in being a part of this team, either as a deployment team member or operational support(located throughout the US) please contact George Heake at 215-589-9261 or gheake@temple.edu, as soon as possible.

Haiti DisabilityRelief Effort

The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs and the Pass It on Center have launched a Haiti Disability Response effort for priority items: which are crutches, walkers, canes, ramps and medical supplies, which should include splints. All sizes are needed, especially for children.

We are supporting the incredible work being done by Portlight Strategies (portlight.org) who have already shipped equipment there and have a very strong logistics system in place. They also need funding to help with shipping and purchasing water purification systems. They are shipping out of Atlanta, which will be the destination of all the supplies and equipment.

I encourage everyone to go to the following site http://haiti-disability.ning.com/ and join the community. And for all you twitters, please help us get the word out on twitter haiti_disabi and pass it on far and wide!

If you would like to volunteer, we need help in many areas: fundraising, corporate sponsorship, blogging, php programming etc.We have a very critical need of making our social networking site accessible (508/wcag compliant)
